27 September 2024 - The Minister for Environment, Dion George has given notice of his intention to adopt the GENERIC ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME FOR THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK 2024, Revision 1.
Once the programme is adopted, it will exclude South African National Parks (SANParks) from the requirement to obtain environmental authorisation for a series of identified activities.
According to the Government Notice, the aim of the Generic EMPr is to facilitate and simplify the implementation of maintenance, upgrading, expansion and new developments within the Kruger National Park.
Activities intended to be excluded from requiring an EIA (and thus environmental authorisation) include:
new developments or expansions within the park, subject to certain thresholds
maintenance and upgrading projects including the extraction of gravel, sand and stone.
projects related to conservation or rehabilitation
emergency activities related to floods and natural disasters, or combating of animal poaching.
