KZN PROVINCIAL WATERCOURSE INFRASTRUCTURE STANDARD & ASSOCIATED EXCLUDED ACTIVITIES
REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
9 February 2024 - Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, has recently published her intention to develop and adopt, in terms of section 24(10)(a) of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Watercourse Infrastructure Standard and Associated Excluded Activities.
Based on compliance with this Standard, the intention is to exclude, in terms of section 24(2)(d) of NEMA, identified activities as set out in the Schedule, from the requirement to obtain an environmental authorisation.
The proposed standard is targeted at the following project types:
Local access road culverts, causeways and bridges
Pedestrian bridges
Water and sewer pipelines
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Watercourse Infrastructure Standard and Associated Excluded Activities establishes the processes and procedures for specified watercourse infrastructure activities to be excluded from the requirement to obtain an environmental authorisation , subject to registration of these projects with the competent authority and adherence to the provisions contained in the Generic Environmental Management Programme and the Standard.
Members of the public are invited to submit written comments by 13 March 2024, on the draft standard.
